Symbolism Essay

Here is the question your thesis should answer (the “prompt”):

How and why does Kate Chopin use symbolism in her novel?

This means that you can’t just explain what each symbol means, you also have to talk about what larger point Kate Chopin is making in her novel.

Example: Kate Chopin uses waking up to symbolize awareness. This symbolism underpins the idea that women should not blindly follow their husbands, but they should have their own ideas as well.

Notice that now I need two body paragraphs:

  • The first body paragraph needs to prove that Chopin used waking up to symbolize awareness. Find evidence that shows Edna became aware of her desires and aware of who she really was and this was connected to waking up.
  • The second body paragraph needs to explain how the symbolism helps support the major idea: women should have their own ideas.
